RAILWAY LINE AMFIPOLIS PORT - NEA ZICHNI: In 1938 the construction of the new railway line Thessaloniki - Port of Amfipolis - Mirini, 129 km long and of normal width (1,435 meters), began. The purpose of the creation of the line was to bypass the mountains of the prefecture of Kilkis and Serres, reducing the route Thessaloniki - Alexandroupolis, by 69 km. The alignment of the line would be south of the villages of Neochorouda and Oreokastro, then it would pass through the straits of Chortiatis and following the route south of lakes Lagadas and Volvi, it would pass through the straits of Asprovalta, the bridge of Strimonas, Amfipolis, east of the village Mirkinos and would end at the station of Mirini (in today's Nea Zihni). The works began in 1940 from the 25 km long section of the Port of Amfipolis - Nea Zihni, and its inauguration took place on 5 May 1940. Due to the beginning of the Greek-Italian War, the section from Thessaloniki to the Port of Amfipolis was never constructed. The network was constructed at the stations Mirini (Nea Zihni), Mirkinos, Amfipolis and Port of Amfipolis. The kilometer numbering of the line started from the station of Nea Zihni. The line was dismantled in 1970.
