RAILWAY LINE POLIKASTRO - FERE: On 10 September 1892, by imperial decree, the French banker of Constantinople, Rene Beaudoay, was granted the privilege of construction and operation for 99 years of the network, which would connect the lines of the C.O., Thessaloniki - Skopje and Alexandroupolis - Adrianople. Beaudoay, finding a capitalist, founded the company Enotikos Sidirodromos Thessaloniki - Constantinoupoli (Jonction Salonique-Constantinople J.S.C.) with the right to exploit and construct the line. The construction began on 2 June 1893 and in the middle of 1894, the line had reached the station of Nikiforos with a length of 211 km, while at the end of 1895 a total of 291 km had been constructed. On 1 April 1896, the line of the "Jonction", as it became known, began to operate along its entire length, which was 437 km. The starting point of the line was west of it, at the station of Polikastro, while in the east its end was at the station of Fere, in north of Alexandroupolis. The main reason why the line did not start, nor did it end in Thessaloniki and Alexandroupolis respectively, was the reaction of the C.O., which managed the Ottoman networks in Europe, as it had been granted privileges in the respective ports. In addition, for the transportation of passengers and goods from Polikastro to Thessaloniki and from Fere to Alexandroupolis, he received from J.S.C. similar fares. Then and after many negotiations, J.S.C. by paying compensation to C.O. got the license and built the union lines Thessaloniki - Kalindia and Potamos - Alexandroupolis. J.S.C. in the city of Thessaloniki had two stations of its own. The first was located in the area, where the depot of OSE is located today, while the second, which was served by a single line, was located on Anagennisi Street at the intersection with the 26th of October. It also had its own station in the city of Alexandroupolis on the north-eastern outskirts of the city. After the end of the Balkan wars, as well as WWII, where all the lands fell into Greek territory, in 1921 the line of J.S.C. was bought by the Greek state and immediately belonged to the network of SEK. The kilometer numbering originally started from the station of Polikastro, while today it starts from Thessaloniki.
