RAILWAY LINE PIREAS - DEMERLI - PAPAPOULI (BORDER LINE): The idea for a railway connection between Athina and the northern borders of the country began in 1870 with the proposal of the French engineer E. Piat to the then government of Demetriou Voulgaris. After many attempts, assignments and disagreements, the construction of the line began around 1900. In February 1902, the Eteria Ellinikon Sidirodromon EES (Company of Greek Railways) was founded with a share capital of 10.000.000 drachmas and having as a project the construction and exploitation of the network from Pireas to Larissa with a line of normal range of 1,435 meters, with intersections in Inoi to Chalkis and Lianokladion to Lamia and Stilis. On 6 March 1904, the inauguration of the line from Pireas to Thive and Chalkis (with a fork in Inoi) takes place. On 2 June 1904, the exploitation of the section Thive - Livadia begins. On 12 November 1904 started in circulation the section Livadia - Dadi (current name Amfiklia) and on 11 July 1905 the section Dadi - Bralos. Because the original contract provided for the construction of the line to Larissa, but the company could only complete until Demerli (Paleofarsalos), on 30 June 1906, a new contract was signed for the construction and extension of the line from Demerli to Larissa and then to Papapouli, which was the northern border of the old Greek state with Turkey. On 20 July 1906, the section Lianokladion - Stilis and Lianokladion - Beki (current name Ipati) is delivered. On 24 August 1908 the line arrives in Larissa and on 22 July 1909 at the border line, in the village of Papapouli. Over the years, the line has undergone many times minor modifications, such as that of the bypass of the Orfana station after Paleofarsalos. Also after Larissa in 1961, the station of Makrichori was bypassed and the station of Elatia was created, which then in the 1990s with a second detour was also left out of line. The kilometer numbering of the stations started from the station of Pireas. Today the whole line has been carved into a new high-speed launch, and it is electrified, leaving many old stations out of the network.
