RAILWAY LINE VOLOS - VELESTINON - KALAMBAKA: On 13 May 1882, a contract was signed between Charilaos Trikoupis (as Prime Minister and Minister of Interior) and representative of the contractor Theodoros Mavrogordatos, for the construction of a railway from Volos to Kalambaka via Velestinon. On 22 June 1882, by law of the Parliament, all contracts for the construction of railway lines in Thessalia were ratified. On 25 October 1882, the company Sidirodromos Thessalias a.e. STHS (Thessaly Railway Company S.A.) was founded, which would take advantage of the line Larissa - Velestinon - Volos and the line Velestinon - Kalambaka with a length of 143 km and 1 meter wide. On 16 April 1883, the section Volos - Velestinon is delivered as part of the Larissa - Volos line. On 13 November 1884, the section Velestinon - Farsala is delivered with the junction located 1,391 km after Velestinon station. On 30 June 1885 the line reaches Sofades and on 3 October 1885 in Karditsa. On 9 March 1886 the line was delivered to Stefanossei and on 16 June 1886 the line was completed with the delivery of the section to Kalambaka. The kilometer numbering of the stations started from the port of Volos, which was 0,523 km away from the central station. The Thessaly Railway in 1955 was nationalized and incorporated into the SEK. In 1960 the Larissa - Volos line becomes of normal range (1,435 meters) so the stations Latomion, Aghios Georghios and Velestinon, serve trains of metric and regular range. In 1999 the section Velestinon - Paleofarsalos stopped its circulation and respectively the section Paleofarsalos - Kalambaka in 2001 was converted to normal range and operates like this until today.
