RAILWAY LINE LARISSA - VOLOS:
After the Greek-Turkish War of 1878-9 and the annexation of Thessaly to the Greek State, on 10 August 1881, the Ministry of Interior announced an international tender for the construction of two railway lines, from Pireas to Patra and from Pireas to Larissa. The award of the tender included as an offer two extensions, the one from Korinthos to Nafplion and from Larissa to Volos. However, that contract was unsuccessful because the highest bidder could not obtain the necessary funds. On 11 September 1881, an independent contract was signed (without a new tender) for the construction of the Larissa - Volos line between the Minister of Interior and mechanical representatives of Theodoros Mavrogordatos banker from Constantinople. On 12 September 1881, a royal decree approved the construction of the line. On 25 October 1882, the Sidirodromos Thessalias STHS (Thessaly Railway) was founded, which would operate the line Larissa - Velestinon - Volos with a length of 60 km and 1 meter wide. On 16 April 1883 the section Volos - Velestinon was delivered and on 17 May 1883 the section Velestinon - Armenion. On 24 June 1883 we have the completion of the section Armenion - Melia and on 11 July 1883 the line arrives in Larissa. The official inauguration took place on 22 April 1884 and the opening on 23 April 1884. The kilometer numbering of the stations started from the station of Larissa and ended at the port of Volos, which was 0.523 km away from the central station. The Thessaly Railway in 1955 was nationalized and incorporated into the Sidirodromi Ellinikou Kratous SEK (Hellenic State Railways). In 1956, works began to widen the line in order to reach a standard range of 1,435 meters, which were completed in 1960. In the future plans for the exploitation of the line is the second line layer with simultaneous electrification.
