RAILWAY LINE SARAKLI - STAVROS: During WWI it was deemed necessary by the British forces, the construction of land transport between Thessaloniki and the port of Stavros. The construction study was completed in October 1917. This included the connection of the area of Sarakli (Heraklion Lagadas the current name) with Stavros, following the southern shores of lakes Lagadas and Volvi (almost as the provincial road passes today). Initially, a line width of 1 meter was foreseen, but eventually, due to lack of materials, a line of 0,6 meters width (Decauville type) was laid. However, by the end of 1916 the British forces had built a single line of normal width of 20 km long, connecting the station of Galikos with the town of Assiros, which was delivered for use in March 1917. Within the next few months this line was advanced to Sarakli. Thus, on 14 November 1917, work began on the construction of the line Sarakli - Stavros, which was delivered into circulation on 1 April 1918. At the end of WWI, the British headquarters asked the Greek government to be informed if there was any interesting for the operation of the line. The Greek state acquired in May 1920 for 2.630.000 drachmas, the 65,7 km long line and the SEK began its exploitation in November 1920. For the transport of goods and passengers from the city of Thessaloniki to Sarakli (and back), there was a contracted bus company with the SEK. The train, which operated the routes, became known under the title "the train of Stavrou". On 16 August 1947, the operation of the line was suspended as deficient and in 1952 it was decided to dismantle it, which was completed in 1955. The kilometer count of the line started from the station of Sarakli.
