ATHENS - PIRAEUS RAILWAY: The Societe Anonyme of the Railway from Athens to Piraeus or more commonly known as the Sidirodromos Athinon - Pireos SAP was founded on 8 August 1868 by the English capitalist Eduard Pikering. The main task of the company was the construction and operation of the railway connection of Athina with Pireas. The first line that was laid was a single one with a length of 8,5km and width 1,435m and connected the center of Athens from Thissio station to Pireas. On 17 February 1869, the first test of the line took place and on 27 February 1869 the inauguration at Thissio station took place. In 1875 the SAP was acquired by the Bank of Industrial Credit and in 1880 it establishes a new company with the same name with a share capital of 4.000.000 drachmas divided into 25.000 shares with a nominal value of 160 drachmas. In May 1895, the single line extension to the underground station of Omonia comes into operation. On 16 September 1904, the inauguration of the electrification of the Omonia - Pireas line takes place and it begins to become known under the name "Ilektrikos". In this way, the story of the Athina - Pireas Railways, the forerunner of today's Athens Metro, ended.
